Hexagonal Wire Mesh and Fences: Techinal Information

Hexagonal wire mesh, commonly known as chicken wire, can be divided into the various types, finishes, weaving styles and applications.

Types of Galvanizing

  • Electro Galvanized (Electro Galv):
    This is a cost-effective process through electric or cold galvanizing, suitable for indoor uses, economic project or mild weather conditions.
  • Hot-Dipped Galvanized (HDG):
    A heavy zinc coating, HDG provides superior corrosion resistance, suitable for outdoor and harsh environments.
  • Galfan Galvanized:
    Zinc and aluminum galvanized finish offering exceptional protection in highly corrosive environments, popularly used in gabions.
  • Additional Protective Coatings:
    PVC or vinyl coating can be applied to galvanized and galfan coated mesh.

Weaving Styles

  • Straight Normal Twist:
    The most common and economical style, suitable for basic applications.
  • Reverse Twist:
    This style enhances strength and rigidity compared to the straight normal twist.
  • Double Twist (Straight and Reverse):
    A combination of both twists, providing optimal strength and stability.

Edge Finishes

  • Single Selvage:
    Features a single reinforcement wire along one edge for increased durability.
  • Double Edge:
    Includes reinforcement wires on both edges for enhanced strength.
  • Reinforced Selvages:
    Offers heavy-duty reinforcement, typically found in specific mesh sizes such as 1/2″, 3/4″, and 5/8″.

Applications

  • Perimeter Security:
    For securing lawns, gardens, zoos, animal enclosures, and poultry farms.
  • Erosion Control:
    Wire mesh gabions for slope and soil stabilization.
  • Gabions:
    Hexagonal mesh gabion baskets for retaining walls, riverbank protection and landscaping features.
  • Vermin Control:
    Gopher wire, a specialized hexagonal mesh, prevents burrowing animals from damaging gardens and lawns.
  • Construction Use:
    Stucco netting made of hexagonal mesh, supports and reinforces plaster layers in construction projects.

Available Sizes

Hexagonal wire mesh is available in various sizes.

  • 1/2 inch for small bird enclosures.
  • 3/4 inch, for chicken coops and garden fencing.
  • 1 inch and above, suitable for large animal enclosures and more robust security applications.

Poultry Fencing

  • 1″ Hex Netting (18 Gauge, 36″ x 150′ Roll): Hot-dip galvanized wire mesh for fencing poultry (chickens, ducks) and rabbits. 
  • 20 Gauge 1″ Hex Mesh Fabric: Material for chicken fencing applications.

Poultry Netting

  • Type: Hexagonal mesh (galvanized before twisting)
  • Material Finish: Hot-dipped galvanized 240g/m²
  • Wire Thickness: 1.8mm
  • Mesh Size: 6cm x 8cm
  • Dimensions: 0.9m height x 50m length
  • Reinforcement: This poultry netting includes additional horizontal wires/rods, helps keep the fence straight and upright. These reinforcements ensure the mesh fencing remains secure and efficient for pens and barriers, maintaining structure even under physical stress.

Specialty Hexagonal Mesh

  • Black PVC Coated Galvanized Hexagonal Mesh: Galvanized steel wire mesh with a black PVC coating for heat protection system.
  • Galfan Galvanized Hexagonal Mesh: Aluminum galvanized hexagonal wire mesh offers superior corrosion resistance, suitable for gabions work and rockfall protection system. 

Gabions Mesh

  • 3.4mm and 0.46mm Wire Hexagonal Mesh: Gabion baskets for retaining walls, riverbank protection, and other applications.

Galvanized After Weaving (GAW) Hexagonal Netting Fence

  • Mesh Sizes Available: 1/2″, 1″, 1-1/2″
  • Galvanization: Hot-dipped zinc bath post-weaving
  • GAW Hexagonal Fencing: Wire mesh galvanized after twist
  • Applications: For gardens, game bird pens, and poultry enclosures.
